International Week 2012 - Living Democracy: Citizen Power in a Global Age

The rise of street politics in Northern Africa and the Middle East shocked the mainstream media and most of the world in 2011. The access to active participation of citizens in governance systems was a driving force of a movement that is currently manifesting all over the world in different forms, spreading to North America with the Occupy Wall Street Movement.

Active citizenship in decision making processes and more importantly the current understanding of democracy is being questioned.

The theme for International Week 2012 will centre around what Francis Moore Lappé calls Living Democracy, “democracy as a way of life, no longer something done to us or for us but what we ourselves create”.

Join us for over 60 events at this year's program, including:

  • Opening keynote address by British-Pakistani journalist and filmmaker Tariq Ali - Capitalism and Democracy: Economic Crisis and Democratic Deficit (Jan 30)
  • The International Week 2012 Concert: Good People, featuring Edmonton singer-songwriter Maria Dunn (Feb 3)
  • A live Canadian Citizenship Court Ceremony (Jan 26)
  • Battle for Brooklyn, a film that takes an intimate look at owners and residents' struggles around an arena project in their city (Feb 1)
  • Pre- I-Week concerts on SUB Stage featuring International House Residents, Lunar New Year celebrations and more
  • Dedicated Youth Day events for high school students focusing on women, democracy and development (Feb 3)

...and much, much more!

Canadian International Development AgencyThank you to CIDA

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) is Canada’s largest agency for development assistance. CIDA’s aim is to
contribute resources to achieve meaningful, sustainable results and engage in policy development in Canada and internationally, enabling Canada to realize its development objectives.

Currently, CIDA’s work is focused on three themes: increasing food security, securing the future of children and youth, and stimulating sustainable economic growth. Improving the health of mothers, newborns and children and reducing the number of preventable deaths are thus top priorities for CIDA.

The Global Education Program graciously acknowledges CIDA’s support for International Week 2012 and its other programs.
